The Walled Garden: A Living Legacy at The Orchard

History

Long before The Orchard became one of Ireland’s leading lifestyle and garden destinations, its roots were deeply embedded in the fertile soil of the historic St. Wolstan’s estate, near Celbridge, Co. Kildare. The site we know today as The Orchard Home & Garden Centre was once home to a remarkable five-acre Victorian walled garden, a sophisticated horticultural haven built to supply fresh produce to the grand houses of the estate.

Constructed with tall, brick-built walls, the garden incorporated an ingenious Victorian innovation: a "hot wall" system designed to protect delicate plants from Ireland’s harsh frosts. Fires were lit in hearths still visible in the surviving walls, channelling warm air through cavities between dual layers of brick and limestone. This radiant heat created a microclimate, allowing exotic fruits such as pineapples and melons to thrive, a true mark of status and horticultural excellence at the time. Lean-to glasshouses would have stood against the sun-facing walls, absorbing the warmth by day and releasing it at night.

Fast forward to 1983, when Longford-born horticulturalist Gerry Dooley first discovered the overgrown, neglected garden. Despite years of abandonment since its purchase by a previous family in 1939, Gerry saw its potential and fell in love with its charm and history. Hidden beneath the brambles, bushes and trees lay the soul of a once-glorious orchard waiting to be brought back to life.

By 1987, the first chapter of The Orchard as we know it began. With a conservatory, a small bungalow and a repurposed tomato house serving as the original shop, the garden centre began trading, its success buoyed by the thriving strawberry crops grown on site.

As word spread and demand grew, it became clear that expansion was needed. In 2004, a major redevelopment began, with millions invested in transforming the humble beginnings into something truly special. The crowning achievement was a state-of-the-art, computer-controlled glasshouse, a modern architectural tribute to the Victorian glasshouses that once stood within the garden. Officially opened by TV gardener Charlie Dimmock in 2006, the new structure merged heritage with innovation, echoing the past while embracing the future.

Today, The Orchard stands proudly as a destination unlike any other. Just ten minutes from Liffey Valley, it draws visitors from across the west Dublin and north Kildare region and beyond. The original five-acre walled garden still shapes the experience, wrapping the site in historic warmth and authenticity. Within its walls, you’ll now find a thriving garden centre, award-winning displays, a 220-seat café, pet store and a beautifully curated home interiors collection.

What sets The Orchard apart isn’t just what it offers, it’s where it all began. That same Victorian ingenuity and horticultural spirit lives on in every corner of the garden, evolving through generations but always rooted in history.
